We needed to take care of this problem asap. However, we hate the idea of using toxic chemicals to get rid of them. In fact, it’s not an option for us even if we would. Lindsay’s pregnant, so there’s no way we want any harful chemicals in our apartment. After a bunch of research we decided to try a natural product we found, Dr. Goodpet Inside Flea Relief. Since we’re dealing with a full-fledged infestation we needed to devised a detailed plan to make sure we’re not wasting our efforts. Here’s a quick summary of our plan of attack:

1. Clean and treat the bathroom & bedroom. To make sure the bathing environment is flea free. The bedroom is going to be our “quarantine” area to hold the clean dogs while we continue to clean and treat the rest of the apartment.
2. Bathe the dogs. We’re using an Oatmeal Shampoo to sooth their irritated skin. We’ve used natural flea shampoo twice already this past week (any good natural dog shampoo with neem oil will effectively drown and kill the fleas on your pet).
3. Clean and treat the Kitchen.
4. Clean and treat the living room. Applying Inside Flea Relief to the couch, one of the main area’s they hang out during the day.

Hopefully by strategically approaching the problem we will be able to eliminate the fleas for good!

About the Product: Dr. Goodpet Inside Flea Relief is a natural powder. Apply it to your floors and furniture to kills fleas and keeps them from continuing to live in your carpet or upholstery. All without harmful chemicals that can be toxic to your pets & family. The Dr. Goodpet website says it:

Offers easy-to-apply protection by killing existing fleas and preventing insects from setting up house in carpets, furniture and upholstery. There is no longer a need to “flea-bomb” with toxic pesticides.

The powder works by attacking the fleas at a microscopic level. The particles of dust are razor sharp to a flea, while to us and our dogs, it’s not much more harmful than table salt.

How to Use It:

Before applying it’s best to do a thorough house cleaning. Vacuuming all the areas you plan on applying the powder before will help suck up any flas or egss already stowed away in your carpets or upholstery. Apply directly to any areas that pets frequently lie or hang out in.

For carpeted areas: Apply to carpet and work deeply into the fibers and mat. I found the best way to do this is to work the powder in with my hands. I recommend wearing rubber cleaning gloves to protect your skin. They claim the powder is not harmful but I wore them anyway,  just case. Vacuum up any visible powder after you’re done working it in.

For hardwood or solid flooring: Apply lightly to surfaces and work into the cracks and crevices. I used a broom to spread it. Again, I found the best way to do this was to rub it right into the seams between the pieces of our hardwood floors with my hands (wearing rubber gloves). Then sweep up the leftover powder and discard. Afterward, I went over the floors again with a dry paper towel to pick up any excess dust.

Warning: The powder leaves a slippery residue on hard surfaces. Please be careful after you apply this when walking on it. I almost slipped a couple times, so please be careful!

How Did it Work?

We had surprisingly good results. We noticed a difference right away, during the following 2-3 days there we barely saw any fleas. It did not completely rid them all, but it definitely made a difference. Another application the next weekend combined with frequent baths and lots of vacuuming did the trick. Depending on how bad the infestation is, it may take a few applications to really work. Fleas a sneaky little critters that are very hard to evict once they’ve set up house.

Closing Thoughts

If you’re like us and can’t stand the idea of bombing your house with toxic chemicals that are harmful to pets and humans than this may be the perfect solution for you. It takes some work to apply. We were pretty tired by the time we were done. But, let’s face it… if you’ve got a flea infestation on your hands, you’re in for some work anyway.
